Green energy available for everyone

90%

Almost all thermal energy used for industrial processes originate from fossil fuels. This is 75% of all energy used by the industry generating 25% of the global carbon emissions.

To reduce the global carbon footprint, we need to use more energy from green sources to produce heat for industrial processes

The solution to increase the use of green energy sources is to capture the energy when it is abundant, and store it for later use

investor-header

In school we were told that the sun has enormous amounts of energy. It beams 10 000 times more energy than we can use at us, every day -for free.

So there really is no shortage of green energy. Except at night, and when the wind isn't blowing.

Almost all industrial processes use thermal energy. And almost all that heat is generated from burning stuff, increasing the CO2 in our atmosphere.

We founded Kyoto to develop solutions to capture and manage the abundant energy from renewable energy sources and apply it to reduce the CO2 footprint for industrial process heat.

Watch our business status update from the H1 2021 report.

This 4 minute video from our webcast on August 20th 2021 gives you a brief update on our current business plan, presented by CEO Christopher Kjølner and CFO Camilla Nilsson.

Technology

Renewable energy requires load shifting.

Generating thermal energy from renewable power sources like the sun and wind is challenging - sometimes there’s too little of it, and sometimes there’s too much of it.

Our thermal battery enables load shifting by storing energy from renewable sources when it is abundant, and storing it for later use.

The result is low cost and clean energy.

Meet Kyoto Heatcube™

With a heart of molten salt, our thermal battery can be customized to meet your energy needs. Kyoto Heatcube™ can be configured to with capacities from 4 MWh to over 100 MWh, and with discharge load up to 25 MW.

The energy efficiency with a thermal energy only discharge is 90%, while 65% thermal and 25% electric power can be extracted from the battery in a combined heat and power configuration (CHP).

We deliver the Kyoto Heatcube™ thermal battery system in 20 feet containers directly to you on site, ready to be integrated to your plant.

Cost-effective

With low CAPEX, negligible OPEX and the ability to charge/discharge continuously and in parallel, our thermal battery can deliver very attractive Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS)

Long lifetime

Thanks to having few moving parts and the fact that the salt does not degrade over time, the expected lifetime of is 20-30 years.

Plug and play

The Kyoto Heatcube is prefabricated and delivered on site, ready to be easily integrated to your production system

Recyclable

Since we only use abundant non-toxic components in our battery, Kyoto Heatcube can be recycled without leaving any harmful chemicals in the environment.

Kyoto Heatcube™ pilot

On 1 February 2020 we started the development of our unmanned thermal battery. By mid June Kyoto Heatcube™ was in operation with molten salt, managed with our own SCADA system, Kyotopia.

Since then we have overcome quite a few challenges. The prototype is dimensioned for loads up to 1 MW.

The pilot will serve as our base for future development and testing as we scale the capacity and load of Kyoto Heatcube™.

The first beginning

Kyoto Group today focuses on storing renewable energy on an industrial scale.
However, as is the case with many innovative companies, we arrived here in a roundabout way.

It all started when our founder Jon Bøhmer moved to Nairobi, Kenya. While he was there, the Financial Times in 2009 hosted the Climate Change Competition, aiming to find the most effective, simple, and practical solution to climate challenges.

Read more about Jon Bøhmer’s solution for capturing solar energy and storing it for use around the clock, to supply a large amount of energy and remove a cause of climate change.
