Kyoto’s mission: Empower industries with renewable thermal energy.

At Kyoto Group, we are on a mission to make renewable energy the easy choice for industries.
Our innovative thermal battery technology enables industries to replace fossil fuels with clean electricity for heat production - without compromising efficiency, stability, or cost. Since industrial heat accounts for nearly half of global energy consumption, our solutions are crucial in driving a sustainable transition.

By storing renewable energy as heat and making it available when needed, we empower industries to embrace variable energy sources like wind and solar. Kyoto Group is more than a company - it’s a movement towards a greener future.

Kyoto's vision: A world powered by Nature.

Kyoto Group is named after the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. The Protocol represents a significant step in global efforts to address climate change, setting the stage for future agreements like the Paris Agreement. Kyoto Group aims to revolutionise industrial process heat and reduce CO2 emissions.

About the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer specialized in structural systems to join our engineering team for industrial energy projects (e.g. thermal storage, packaged boilers, modular plants). This role is critical for ensuring the reliability, feasibility, and integration of structural designs, which are typically developed by third-party engineering firms or suppliers.

The engineer will focus on reviewing and validating external structural calculations, verifying structural interfaces and interferences with plant equipment, ensuring accessibility, and proposing design improvements that optimize cost and schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Review and validate structural calculations, including nodes, joints, and load combinations, provided by third-party design firms.
  • Ensure structural designs comply with applicable codes (Eurocode, ASME, AISC, etc.) and project specifications.
  • Assess integration of structures with plant equipment, piping, tanks, and access platforms.
  • Identify and resolve interferences or conflicts between structures and other disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil).
  • Evaluate design proposals in terms of constructability, accessibility, maintenance, and optimization of cost and execution time.
  • Participate in design reviews (model and document-based), and interface with suppliers and construction teams.
  • Prepare or oversee structural verification reports and risk assessments.
  • Recommend design improvements based on experience in industrial environments.
  • Design minor static structures for piping and cable trays.

Required skills &  experiences

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or Structural Engineering with mechanical background).
  • 5+ years of experience in structural engineering within industrial or energy projects.
  • Solid understanding of steel structures, supports, connections, and interaction with heavy equipment.
  • Experience reviewing third-party engineering packages and verifying structural integrity.
  • Familiar with 3D model coordination (Navisworks, SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit, etc.) and structural analysis tools (e.g. STAAD, Robot, RFEM, SAP2000).
  • Strong knowledge of relevant design codes (Eurocode, ASME, EN, AISC).
  • Fluent in English (B2 minimum).
  • Knowledge of CYPE Ingenieros and TEKLA Software.

Nice to have

  • Experience in thermal systems (boilers, tanks, thermal storage, pressure vessels).
  • Knowledge of construction planning, lifting strategies, and modularization.
  • Experience with vendor package reviews, fabrication drawings, and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Understanding of multidisciplinary coordination and plant layout constraints.

Who are you?

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, integrity, self-motivation, and passion for your work.
  • Passionate about renewable energy and committed to driving the transition to a low-carbon economy, you are eager to contribute to a mission-driven organisation.
  • You excel in dynamic and fast-growing environments, adapting quickly to change while maintaining a high standard of excellence.
  • Your ability to collaborate across teams, communicate effectively, and navigate evolving priorities makes you a valuable asset in an ambitious and forward-thinking company.

Are you eager to be part of a fast-growing scale-up that’s accelerating the energy transition?

At Kyoto, we empower our employees with the freedom and responsibility to take on challenges, innovate, and drive real impact in the fight against climate change.

We foster a diverse and collaborative work environment where people from different backgrounds come together to achieve a shared mission—providing renewable thermal energy to industries. Kyoto offers competitive compensation, a comprehensive benefits plan (including medical, travel, life insurance, and pension), and a workplace that values flexibility, growth, and team spirit. From professional development opportunities to team-building events and seasonal celebrations, we ensure our people feel valued and connected.

About us

Kyoto Group

Founded in 2016, Kyoto is a Norwegian company dedicated to harnessing the vast potential of variable renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. Our mission is to leverage this clean energy to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with industrial thermal loads significantly. We are pioneering the integration of thermal sales and flexibility into a single product, positioning Kyoto as a competitive leader in the thermal industry. Our unique approach allows us to offer both heat sales and flexibility solutions, making a sustainable future more attainable.

Market & Products

Kyoto's core strategy involves selling and operating Heatcube thermal batteries, which enable industrial consumption of low-cost heat derived from surplus solar and wind energy (i.e., during periods of low-priced electricity). Additionally, Kyoto operates an Energy Management System—a remote-control solution that optimises renewable energy consumption for cost efficiency and carbon neutrality. Our dual focus is to provide end-users with an affordable, carbon-neutral heat product while offering balancing services and flexibility solutions to power producers and grid operators.

Culture & Values

At Kyoto Group, our values are the cornerstone of our identity, guiding our daily actions. We deeply care for our people and planet, reflecting our commitment to a sustainable future. Our unwavering determination fuels our ambition, driving us to focus on solutions instead of problems. We approach every endeavour dedicated to making a positive impact with enthusiasm and passion.
