September highlights progress in industrial heat
This month's updates brings you news about how Kyoto has become part of an important energy storage initiative, checking in on the steel industry's decarbonization strategies and implementation and more.
Looking ahead, Thermal Energy Day 2025 and the KALL Ingredients Heatcube Inauguration will showcase how industrial heat and storage are enabling cleaner, more reliable energy across Europe.
Discover how thermal energy storage is driving real impact in industry this September.
Kyoto Group recognized in Europe’s official energy storage inventory
We’re excited to announce that Kyoto Group has been added to the European Energy Storage Inventory, the EU Joint Research Centre’s official reference for energy storage projects across Europe.
The inventory maps storage initiatives from planning to operation, covering a wide range of technologies, from electrochemical and mechanical systems to thermal solutions like our Heatcube. By providing a clear overview of Europe’s storage landscape, it helps policymakers, investors, and researchers understand how these technologies are supporting the continent’s energy transition.
Being part of this platform highlights our contribution to a more sustainable and resilient energy system, and ensures our projects are visible on a European scale.

Industry Trends | Decarbonizing the Steel industry
The Steel is one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries, still emitting billions of tonnes of CO2 each year. Without decisive action, the sector risks locking in high emissions for decades to come, particularly as new coal-burning blast furnaces are still being built in emerging economies.
Momentum around a clean transition is now at a tipping point. The pace of announcing new unsustainable production methods has slowed, and attention is shifting toward fossil-free production.
Decarbonization strategies increasingly focus on a structural shift, which relies heavily on electrification:
- Expanding the use of Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs), the cleaner production route, is a growing trend.
- Developing Green Iron Trade, creates new global value chains that decouple production from coal.
- Scaling up new, cleaner production technologies.
However, this shift has setbacks: The global push for green hydrogen has seen its initial hype give way to the reality that production is still near zero and costs are higher than promised. This lack of cheap, reliable green energy creates a major bottleneck, delaying large-scale transition projects.
To tackle these energy reliability challenges and secure a stable supply for clean electric-based steelmaking, energy storage solutions are critical. Leveraging utility-scale battery or thermal storage can help to balance intermittent renewable energy sources, ensuring the constant, reliable power supply needed for new green steel facilities.
