KALL Ingredients Heatcube: year in review

This year has been one of remarkable progress for our Heatcube project at KALL Ingredients. Early in 2024, construction picked up pace with the foundation completed and major installations underway. By mid-year, all key components, including molten salt tanks and the upper heater, were in place, signaling a significant step toward the project’s completion.

By October, the engineering phase was 95% finished, and the structural framework was ready for final touches. With construction nearing its conclusion, Heatcube is now on track to begin operations by late 2024. This renewable energy solution will deliver over 30 GWh annually, replacing natural gas in steam production and cutting CO₂ emissions by up to 8,000 tons each year.

Kyoto Group, KALL Ingredients, Kyotherm, Energiabörze Kft, and partners have worked together to make this groundbreaking project a reality. This project embodies our vision of making renewable energy a seamless, practical choice for industrial production, driving meaningful change toward a sustainable future.

How to decarbonize a donut

Every donut comes with a hidden carbon price tag, thanks to fossil fuels. Food production accounts for 15% of global fossil fuel use, and the question isn’t if it must change, but how fast.

For managers, balancing ESG targets with profitability is no small task. Waiting to act means rising CO2 taxes, volatile gas prices, and falling behind competitors. Companies like Target are already demanding net-zero commitments from suppliers—can you afford to wait?

Decarbonizing food production isn’t optional anymore! So are you ready to explore how it’s done?

Industry trends: Paper & Pulp sector

The global paper and pulp industry continued to evolve in 2024, shaped by shifting consumer preferences, sustainability pressures, and technological advancements. Over the past year, packaging and tissue products have remained the most in-demand, with recycled materials such as fluting, testliner, and folding cartons playing a leading role. This marks a notable shift from the declining demand for traditional paper products like newsprint and copy paper, seen over the last 15 years.

However, challenges persist. Rising energy costs, raw material shortages, and geopolitical uncertainties are creating pressure on production and supply chains. At the same time, the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is driving positive change by increasing the demand for recycled fibers and promoting more sustainable practices, though it may also impact the availability and cost of recovered materials.

Looking ahead, the industry will likely see further growth in recycled and sustainable packaging solutions as regulations tighten and demand for eco-friendly materials continues to rise.
